Salvatore Blue Gold Premium on blonde and bleached hair: temperature, blue colourant and aftercare

Salvatore Blue Gold Premium (Step 1 + Step 2) is the tannin smoothing Salvatore itself labels for coloured and bleached hair: 'colour protection' on the front, a blue colourant (CI 44045) in the conditioner that counteracts warm tones, and a printed flat-iron tip for blonde hair of 180 to 200 °C. So the answer to 'can taninoplastia go on blonde hair' is yes, on three conditions: the allergy test, a test strand and the iron inside the printed range. Why does blonde hair react differently to the flat iron?

Because the heat that sets the tannin can also shift the tone on bleached hair. Salvatore says so itself on the Blue Gold Premium Step 2 bottle:

Two things are in that line: a temperature limit and a reason. Bleached hair is more porous and finer than untreated hair, so it dries out faster under the plate and the warm undertone surfaces sooner. That is why on blonde hair you work at the bottom of the range, in thin sections and with more passes at the root than at the ends, and not with a hotter plate to finish faster.

How does the Blue Gold Premium protocol run on blonde hair?

The same protocol as on any other hair, with the blonde tip as the extra rule. This is what the Step 1 and Step 2 bottles print:

   Allergy test

   Before you start: Step 2 on the forearm and nape, as the bottle prescribes. On bleached hair we add a test strand where the hair is most bleached.

   Step 1, anionic shampoo

   On wet hair, massage gently into the scalp, distribute to the ends without rubbing the fibre, rinse with cold or lukewarm water. Repeat; no leave-on. Remove the excess water to towel-dry.

   Step 2, realignment conditioner

   Shake well. Apply section by section with a tint brush, root to ends, spread with a comb. Leave on for 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cold or lukewarm water.

   Flat iron

   Thin 1 cm sections, an average of 10 passes according to the strength of the fibre, more at the root than at the ends. On blonde hair between 180 and 200 °C, at the bottom of the range on fine or heavily bleached hair.

   Check

   Strands that do not reach the expected result are dried and ironed again without a new Step 2, as the bottle says.

What does the blue colourant in the conditioner do?

The Blue Gold conditioner carries CI 44045, a blue colourant, and blue sits opposite yellow on the colour wheel: it counteracts warm, yellow tones in blonde and grey hair, like a silver shampoo. The product is rinsed out completely after 30 minutes; it leaves no blue cast, it takes the yellow glow off. The same colourant is in the Tanino Therapy Step B conditioner, so there too a warm shift from the product itself is nothing to fear on blonde hair; the shift the bottle names comes from too much heat.

What do you not do on blonde hair?

• Not above 200 °C. The bottle prints the maximum; the reason is tonality loss and dryness.
• Not without a test strand. Bleached hair differs per client and per bleaching; one strand at the most bleached spot says more than any rule.
• Not raising the temperature to fix strands that did not take. The bottle says: dry and iron again, without a new Step 2 and without a hotter plate.

What do you watch for?
