Salvatore Blue Gold Premium Step 2 Hair Realignment Conditioner (1000ml) is the tannin half of the Blue Gold system, sold on its own in a back-bar litre. The list carries no formaldehyde, no releaser and no glyoxylic acid: plant tannin does the smoothing and the flat iron sets it. It is Step 2, the bottle that follows the Step 1 prep shampoo, and the grey export pack prints colour protection on the front and a 30-minute leave-on on the back.

Why this step

A two-step service does not empty in two equal halves. The prep shampoo is a wash and goes a long way; the conditioner is brushed on section by section and a long, thick head can take most of a litre in one sitting. That is why this bottle exists on its own. We keep a spare Step 2 on the shelf and reorder the shampoo half as often, because a column that runs the service weekly hits the same wall every time.

Key ingredients

Plant tannin is the smoothing active, and heat is what activates it. Around it sit gelatin, collagen and keratin proteins, a silk protein, tucuma and cupuacu seed butters, macadamia and linseed oils. Underneath are panthenol, niacinamide, vitamin B6, vitamin E and a vitamin C derivative, with guarana and bamboo extracts and a moisture binder, saccharide isomerate. What to expect

Frizz down, wave loosened, shine up, movement kept. What we tell salons is plain. This realigns and softens the fibre from inside the cortex; it is not a relaxer and it does not flatten. It fades out with the regrowth rather than leaving a line.

Professional tip

The mistake we see most is a section brushed too lightly because the bottle is nearly out. Use what the section needs; a thin, patchy coat is how a head comes out uneven, and you pay for that saving at the basin. Check that every strand is evenly wet before the clock starts. Keep the printed 30 minutes rather than stretching it, because the uptake does not improve past it. We order this bottle two deep and the kit once, which is the ratio a weekly column actually burns.

How to use

Run it as the second half of the service, after the Step 1 prep shampoo has cleaned and anionised the hair. Patch test first, a little on the forearm and the nape, and stop if it reacts.

Shake the bottle well before you start; the pigment settles. Everything below assumes Step 1 is already rinsed out and the hair towel-dried to about half dry.

1. Shake and section. Divide the head as you would for any smoothing service, so the brush can reach the root of every section.
2. Brush it on. Apply section by section with a tint brush, root to end, then comb through until every strand is evenly wet.
3. Leave 30 minutes. That is the printed time for the actives to be taken up, and there is nothing to gain past it.
4. Rinse and dry. Rinse with cool or warm water until nothing slips off the hair, then blow-dry straight and take it fully dry.
5. Set with the iron. Pass 1 cm sections about 10 times, more at the root than the ends, 180 to 200 degrees maximum on blonde hair. Close with a pH-stabilising moisture step.

Sold alone, this is the conditioner without its wash. The Premium 2x1000ml duo is both steps in back-bar litres, and the 2x100ml kit is the trial box with a pH stabiliser in it.
