Roller diameter decides the shape the hair keeps. A 38 mm roller is sized for lift at the root and a soft, open bend through the lengths, rather than a tight ringlet. That is the look most event and blow-dry clients ask for: body that moves, ends that turn under, curls that brush out into waves. We reach for jumbo rollers when a client wants volume across the whole head and a tong would mean passing heat over every section.

Professional tip

Work a little mousse or setting spray through the hair before the final blow-dry, then lift each section straight up from the scalp before you roll. Take your time at the start of each wind and feed the ends flat onto the velvet before you turn the roller, so no end kinks back on itself. We set the crown first: it carries most of the volume and gets the longest time in. The hair takes its shape as it cools, not while it heats, so the cooling time is where the set is made.

How to use

Blow-dry the hair completely and brush it smooth.
Place the rollers in the base, close the lid and plug in. Give them time to heat with the lid closed.
Take a section no wider than the roller and comb it straight up from the scalp.
Set the roller on the base of the section for full lift, or just below it for a softer root.
Wind towards the scalp and fix the roller with a butterfly clip, or slide a metal pin through it.
Work from the crown and top towards the sides and the nape, winding away from the face at the front.
Leave the rollers in until they are cool, then unwind them from the nape upwards.
Finger-comb or brush through for the finish you want, then unplug the base.

Safety: The rollers, the base and the metal pins get hot. Handle rollers by their ends, and let rollers, pins and lid cool before you touch or store them. Keep the set away from water and never use it with wet hands. Unplug the base after use and before cleaning, and keep it out of reach of children.

Do I use the rollers on dry or damp hair?

On dry hair. Blow-dry the hair completely first, then set it. Damp hair has to dry before it can take a shape, and heated rollers are not made to dry it, so a damp set tends to drop. A little mousse or setting spray worked through before the final blow-dry gives the set more to hold on to.

How long should I leave the rollers in?

Until they are completely cool to the touch - there is no fixed number of minutes. A roller taken out while it is still warm gives a softer set that drops sooner. Thick or long hair holds heat for longer, so it needs more time than fine hair. On an event day we set the hair first and do the make-up or the next task while the rollers cool.

Are the rollers suitable for fine, bleached or damaged hair?

They can be, with care. BaBylissPRO gives 120 °C as the roller temperature, and the set has no temperature setting. The gentler route is therefore preparation: a heat protectant, then one test section before you set the whole head. The soft velvety surface is designed to grip the hair gently. If the hair is already breaking, treat it first and leave the heat for later.

Can I use the set abroad?

Only on 230 V mains. The set is rated 230 V~ 50 Hz, 400 W, and it is not dual voltage. In other 230 V countries a plug adapter for the socket shape is all you need. On lower-voltage mains, such as in the US or Canada, the set is not suitable, even with an adapter.

Butterfly clips or metal pins - which should I use?

Both hold the roller; choose by where it sits. A butterfly clip grips roller and section in one move and is the quickest option on the top and crown. A metal pin slides through the roller into the base of the section and lies flatter. That helps at the nape and around the face, where a clip can press a mark into the hair. Pins that have touched a hot roller get warm, so hold them by the end.

Is 38 mm right for my hair length?

It suits hair that wraps at least one full turn around the roller, which in practice means mid-length to long hair. On shorter hair the ends only reach part of the way round, so the roller has little to hold and you get a bend rather than a curl. For short hair or tighter curls, a smaller curling tong is the better choice.

How do I clean the base and the rollers?

Unplug the base and let everything cool completely first. Wipe the base and the inside of the lid with a dry or slightly damp cloth, and never put the base in water or under a tap. Remove loose hair and product residue from the rollers and clips with a soft brush or a cloth. Do not soak them, and let any damp part dry before the rollers go back in.
