Salvatore Tanino Therapy Tanino Touch Leave-In (120ml) is the no-rinse finisher that closes a Tanino Therapy routine, made to be worked through damp lengths before the dryer or the iron. It conditions with behentrimonium methosulfate and two light silicones, and its list carries no formaldehyde, no formaldehyde releaser and no glyoxylic acid. Salvatore built it to make brushing and blow-drying easier and to hold the fibre against the dryness that dryers and straighteners leave behind. The proteins live in the sibling serum; this bottle is about slip.

Why this leave-in

Heat is what undoes a smoothing faster than anything else in a client's week. A dryer at full blast and an iron on dry, bare hair take moisture out of the fibre, and the result goes dull and rough long before it should. This bottle sits between the two. Worked through damp lengths, it leaves a conditioning film that the brush glides over, so the blow-out takes less pulling and less time under the nozzle. Key ingredients

Cetearyl alcohol and cetyl alcohol give the cream its body, with behentrimonium methosulfate and cetrimonium chloride as the conditioning quats that flatten the cuticle. Cyclopentasiloxane and dimethiconol are the two silicones behind the slip and the shine. Glycereth-26 and propylene glycol hold water in the fibre, hydroxypropyl starch phosphate keeps the texture light, and guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride leaves the lengths combable. Professional tip

The mistake we see most is a full pump on soaking hair. Squeeze the water out first, take a hazelnut of cream, and warm it between your palms before it touches the lengths. Salvatore's own directions say the same in short: "apply a small amount of the product to clean and moist hair, from the length to the tips." Start at the ends, work up as far as the mid-lengths, and comb it through so the film sits evenly under the iron. On fine hair we would halve whatever you think you need.

How to use

Use it after your wash, on damp hair, every time heat is going near the lengths. It stays in; there is nothing to rinse out.

The order matters because the film has to be on the fibre before the heat is, not after. Applied to dry hair it sits on the surface and does far less.

1. Wash and squeeze. Wash as usual, then press the excess water out with your hands, because the cream spreads further on damp hair than on dripping hair.
2. Warm it in your palms. Take a hazelnut of cream into your palms and rub them together, so it softens and lands evenly instead of in patches.
3. Apply from the lengths down. Work it from the lengths to the ends and leave the root area alone, since the ends are the part that meets the heat first.
4. Comb and finish. Comb it through, then blow-dry or iron as you like; the film does its work while the heat is on the hair.
