Hair botox explained: what a hair botox treatment is, and what it is not
Hair botox is a name, not an ingredient. There is no botulinum toxin in any of it, and it has nothing to do with the injectable. What the name describes is a deep-conditioning treatment: frizz drops, volume comes down, the hair shines. The part almost nobody explains is that some products sold as BTOX also carry a reducer, which makes them smoothing treatments wearing the botox name. Those two things are not the same service, and this page is about telling them apart.
Beauty As Well carries seven botox lines across the Brazilian brands, from conditioning masks to reducer-based creams. If you want the smoothing side of the story instead, our smoothing guide covers the chemistry those services run on.
What is hair botox?
A hair botox therapy is a rich, protein- and oil-loaded mask applied in the salon, left to work, rinsed, blow-dried and sealed with a flat iron. The job is conditioning: the hair lies flatter, reflects more light and behaves. With no reducer in the formula, a true hair botox is not a straightener.
That also sets its limits: in our experience it is not permanent, and it is a repeat service.
Is a hair botox treatment a straightener?
This is where the category goes wrong, so here is the test. Look for a reducer on the printed ingredient list. A reducer is the active that lets the hair be ironed into a new shape: cysteamine with cysteine on the straightening creams in this article, glyoxylic acid on the glyoxylic route. A product with no reducer cannot straighten, whatever the name on the tub says.
Neither is better than the other. They answer different requests, and the mistake that costs a salon a client is booking one when the client wanted the other.
Hair botox, keratin, cysteamine or tannin: what is the difference?
Four routes, one table. What separates them is what they do to the fibre, not how good they are.
If it is the smoothing side you are choosing between, each route has a page of its own: cysteamine hair smoothing explained, for the tannin route taninoplastia explained, and for glyoxylic acid nanoplastia explained. To see them side by side the way your client describes them, hair botox or keratin does that, with our smoothing guide for the wider picture.
Who is a hair botox for?
In our experience the brief is dry, frizzy or voluminous hair that wants smoothness and shine without a chemical straightener, and it is a good answer for colour-treated and heat-stressed hair that needs conditioning more than it needs reshaping.
- Good fit Frizz and volume the client wants calmed rather than removed; dull, over-worked lengths; a client who does not want a straightener near their hair.
- Poor fit Anyone expecting permanently straight hair, which this cannot do; very fine hair that goes limp under a rich conditioning treatment; a client who wants one service and never a repeat, since this is a repeat service.
How does a hair botox treatment work in the chair?
The sequence below follows the Mass Replenisher pack: prepare, apply, time, rinse, dry, seal. Here the timing is the result lever rather than a fixed rule.
-
1Strand test first
The BTOX, Bio Lamination and Bioplastia packs ask for it, and it tells the stylist how much the hair will take and how it behaves under the iron before the whole head is committed.
-
2Prepare the hair
Clarify where salon practice calls for it, then work to the state the product asks for. Read the pack: the systems differ on damp or unwashed hair, and it matters.
-
3Apply and time it
On the Mass Replenisher the timing sets the outcome: 15 to 20 minutes to reduce frizz, or 40 to 60 minutes to reduce volume. Watch the hair, not only the clock.
-
4Rinse, then dry fully
Blow-dry 100 percent before the iron, as the pack prints it.
-
5Seal at the iron
Thin strands at 204 °C / 400 °F, moving evenly root to tip. This is where the shine is actually made, and where the heat risk sits, so take extra care on fine or previously lightened sections.
How long does hair botox last?
In our experience this is not a permanent service but a repeat service, and it fades rather than grows out: each wash takes a little of it away. Frequent washing, sulfate-heavy shampoo, hard water, chlorine, sun and daily high heat all shorten it. A matched home-care routine is the single biggest thing under the client's control.
That is also why the aftercare product is not an upsell but part of the service: the home-care line exists so the wash at home is not undoing the work of the chair.
Can you do a hair botox at home?
Not these. The Brazil Protein salon treatments named on this page are marked professional use, and the BTOX tubs, Bio Lamination and Bioplastia finish with a flat iron at 204 °C on thin strands, which is not a home procedure and not a small heat exposure to get wrong. Searches for doing it at home are usually really asking how to keep the result, and that part genuinely is a home job.
For the between-visits half: a gentle matched shampoo and conditioner, a mask when the lengths feel dry, and a finishing oil on the ends. In the Brazil Protein range that is the Day by Day duo for everyday washing, the Supreme Repair Shampoo with its Moisturizing Cream when the hair is dry and chemically treated, and the Mix Brazilian Oil on the ends.
Disadvantages and risks of hair botox
Our honest list, because a treatment that is oversold is a treatment that disappoints.
- It is not permanent, and it is not meant to be It is a repeat service. A client who books it expecting a one-off fix for straight hair has been sold the wrong service.
- It does not straighten If the request was straight hair, a conditioning botox will not deliver it, no matter how long it is left on.
- Fine hair can go limp A rich conditioning treatment on hair that did not need weight reads flat rather than smooth. This is a fit question the strand test answers.
- The heat is the real exposure The BTOX tubs finish at the flat iron, at 204 °C. On bleached or fragile hair that is the part to be careful with, not the mask.
- The name causes confusion Some BTOX-labelled products carry a reducer and are smoothing treatments. Read the reducer before you book, or you will be delivering a different service than the one that was agreed.
Which hair botox lines does Beauty As Well carry?
