Why this leave-in

Whatever shape a curl is holding when the water leaves it is the shape it keeps all day. That is the whole case for a no-rinse step. Salvatore's own bottle promises more strength in the curl, help against dry tips, and a film that leaves the pattern defined. The proteins and the humectants do the holding; the silicones let the strands slide so a clump can form. We reach for this bottle more often than the jar, because definition is what clients actually notice in the mirror.

Key ingredients

Cetearyl alcohol and cetrimonium chloride give the light conditioning base, thickened with hydroxyethylcellulose. Collagen and elastin are the two proteins. Silanetriol and panthenol are the humectants that hold water in the fibre. A cyclopentasiloxane and a bis-alkoxy amodimethicone give slip and a soft shine, the second bonding where the cuticle is roughest. Citric acid sets the pH and BHT holds the formula stable. Professional tip

The habit we see most is a leave-in brushed through and then blown straight, which pulls every clump apart. Do the opposite. Apply it to hair that is still dripping, scrunch upward toward the scalp, and let the coil form in your palm before you put a dryer near it. Follow the bottle's own wording and knead from the ends up to the root, since that is the direction the pattern sets in. Diffuse on low or air-dry, and keep your hands off until it is fully dry. We use a second, smaller amount on the tips alone when the ends drink the first one.

How to use

Use it as the last of the three steps, on damp hair after the mask has been rinsed out. It stays in, so there is no rinse after this one and no waiting time either.

Wetness is what makes it work. A soaking length spreads a small amount evenly and lets the clump close; a towel-dried one takes twice the product for half the definition. At the printed amount a 300 ml bottle lasts a long run of washes.

1. Start dripping. Apply straight out of the shower, because the curl is still open and will take the product evenly.
2. Warm it in your palm. Place an amount in the palm of your hand, which is exactly how the bottle words it, and rub your hands together once.
3. Apply down the length. Work from the lengths to the tips, so the driest part of the hair gets the most.
4. Knead upward. Knead from the ends toward the root for an even, defined curl, which is the bottle's own instruction.
5. Dry with care. Diffuse on low or leave it alone to air-dry, and touch nothing until the clump has set hard.
