Why this mask

Dry is not the same as damaged, and the two want different jars. Damaged hair is short of protein and wants rebuilding; dry hair is short of water and oil, and rebuilding it only makes it stiffer. Key ingredients

Coconut oil is the named lipid, and it is one of the few oils small enough to sit inside the fibre rather than only on it. Behentrimonium chloride is the conditioning quat that flattens the cuticle so the comb runs. A cyclopentasiloxane carries the cream and leaves a light finish, and hydroxypropyl starch phosphate keeps that finish from turning heavy. Citric acid sets the pH and BHT holds the oils stable. Professional tip

The mistake we see most is a moisture mask used as a rescue mask on hair that is actually broken. Read the hair first. Stretch a wet strand: if it pulls and springs back it is dry, and this jar is right; if it stretches and stays long it has lost protein and wants a different one. Squeeze the water out before you apply, because a dripping length dilutes the cream and then rinses it away. We give it the few minutes it needs and no more, since a moisture mask has nothing left to give after that.

How to use

Use it as the second step, after the moisturizing shampoo, on lengths and ends only. Rinse with cool or warm water, because hot water roughens the cuticle the mask has just laid flat.

Placement matters more than quantity here. The roots make their own oil and do not need this, so everything you put up there is weight without benefit. A small amount is the printed quantity.

Squeeze first. Press the water out after shampooing, so the cream spreads on damp hair instead of sliding off soaking hair.
Work it through the lengths. Take a small amount and run it from mid-length to the ends with your hands, which is where the dryness actually sits.
Comb it out. Pass a wide comb through so the product reaches the layers underneath instead of sitting on the top one.
Give it a few minutes. Leave it while you finish in the shower, because the fibre takes up what it can in that window.
Rinse and finish. Rinse thoroughly and style as usual, since anything left behind dulls the hair. Close the jar and keep it out of the spray.

External use only. Avoid the eyes and rinse with running water if it happens. Keep the jar closed, below 40 degrees and out of sunlight, and out of reach of children and pets. If irritation occurs, stop and seek advice. Declared allergens: linalool, hexyl cinnamal.

Frequently asked questions

Is the mask formaldehyde-free?

Yes. Formaldehyde, its releasers and glyoxylic acid are all absent. It is a care mask, and what it leaves behind is oil and a conditioning agent, with an acid to hold the pH.

How is it different from a protein mask?

This one adds water and oil; the other adds protein. Using the wrong one is why a mask sometimes leaves hair feeling worse instead of better, and it is the single most common mix-up we correct at the basin.

Does it contain sulfates or silicones?

No sulfates. It does carry a light silicone, a cyclopentasiloxane, which is what gives the slip and the soft finish. It rinses out with the next wash, so nothing builds up from one week to the next.

Can I use it on the roots?

Keep it off them. The scalp makes its own oil and a conditioning cream up there only makes the hair fall flat sooner. Mid-length to ends is where the dryness is and where the jar belongs.
