The Wahl 5-Star Magic Clip Cordless Black is a cord/cordless barber clipper for barbers who blend and fade all day: its patented Stagger-Tooth blade sets the teeth in a staggered pattern instead of one even row, so more hair feeds into the cutting edge on each pass and the blend comes out smoother. The blade is high-carbon steel with titanium and DLC coatings, the upgraded high-speed motor runs at 6500 RPM, and the Li-ion battery gives up to 100 minutes on a 60-minute charge; 290 g, made in the USA.

Why the Magic Clip Cordless Black

Every 5-Star Magic Clip is built around one part: the Stagger-Tooth blade. Its teeth sit in a staggered pattern rather than one even row, so hair is fed into the cutting edge from more than one height on every pass - the mechanism behind the blending and fading Wahl designs it for. This black edition adds an upgraded high-speed motor at 6500 RPM and a high-carbon steel blade with titanium and diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings, rust resistant and longer on its edge than plain steel. Cord/cordless finishes it: up to 100 minutes on a charge, or plug in and carry on.

Key features

  • Patented Stagger-Tooth blade - staggered teeth feed hair into the cut and smooth the blend
  • High-carbon steel blade with titanium and DLC coatings; rust resistant
  • Upgraded high-speed motor, 6500 RPM
  • Taper lever, cutting length 0.5 to 1.2 mm - no guide needed for the transition
  • Li-ion: up to 100 minutes cordless on a 60-minute charge; smart LED charge indicator; cord for when it runs low
  • Lightweight and balanced, 290 g; 8 patented premium cutting guides, 1.5 to 25 mm

What to expect in the hand

At 290 g the Magic Clip Cordless sits light and balanced, so the wrist does the work on a long fade; the lever falls under the thumb and sweeps the cutting length from 0.5 to 1.2 mm without a guide. In dense hair the staggered teeth draw the hair in rather than pushing it ahead of the blade - you notice it on a bulk pass through a heavy crown. The LED pulses while charging, holds solid at full and flashes when the battery runs low - you know before the client sits down.

Who it is for

  • Barbers whose day is fades and blends, who want the Stagger-Tooth blade in the transition zone
  • Anyone who wants one clipper for bulk removal, shaping and free-form work
  • Barbers who want cord-or-cordless freedom: battery for most of the day, cord for the rest
  • Experienced home users who want the 5-Star blade and guide set

Who it is not for

  • Skin fades and crisp outlines - a T-blade trimmer's job; the Magic Clip blends, it does not edge
  • Beard shaping and detail around the ears - the wide blade is built for the head
  • Anyone who wants a heavy all-metal clipper - the Magic Clip is 290 g by design
  • Anyone who wants a charging stand - it charges from its cord and adapter

Professional tip

Open the lever fully and start the fade with the bare blade before you reach for a guide: let the staggered teeth do the feeding and keep the pressure light - the blade is built to draw hair in, and pushing only tears the blend. Close the lever as you walk down to the line, and oil the blade between clients.

How to use

  1. Charge fully before first use with the supplied adapter; the LED pulses while charging, solid when full.
  2. Oil the blade: one drop in the centre of the top blade and one on each end; run briefly, wipe off the excess.
  3. Set the taper lever - up for the closest 0.5 mm cut, down for longer - or clip on a guide from 1.5 to 25 mm.
  4. Take the bulk down first, then blend the transition with the lever open and no guide, closing it on the way down.
  5. When the LED flashes, plug the cord in and keep cutting; left attached with the clipper off, it recharges.
Safety: This is a bladed powered tool: keep the blade and guides away from fingertips while it runs, switch it off before you change a guide, and keep it out of the reach of children. Charge it with the supplied Wahl adapter only, keep it away from water and never dip or soak the clipper or blade in any liquid. Do not use it with a damaged guide or a blade with a missing tooth, and never open the housing.

Care and maintenance

Brush the hair out after each client and oil the Stagger-Tooth blade every day you use it - one drop in the centre of the top blade and one on each end - with the Wahl blade oil from the box; Wahl specifies its own oil, and a blade cleaning spray always gets a drop of oil afterwards, because it leaves the blade dry. Never soak the clipper or blade in any solution: the titanium and DLC coatings resist rust, they do not replace oil. If the LED flashes five times and the clipper will not start, it has locked out on a heavy blade load: clean and oil the blade, reconnect the cord and it resets. And for sectioning hair while you work, add the XanitaliaPro SalonPro hair clips.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Magic Clip Cordless run, and can I keep cutting when the battery is empty?

Up to 100 minutes on a full charge of the Li-ion battery, and a full charge takes 60 minutes. Yes - it is a cord/cordless clipper, so when the battery runs down you plug the supplied cord in and keep cutting on mains power. Leave the cord attached with the clipper switched off and it recharges by itself.

What does the LED tell me, and why will it not switch on after a heavy cut?

The smart LED charge indicator pulses while the clipper charges, holds solid when the battery is full, and flashes when roughly 20 percent is left. If it flashes five times and the clipper refuses to start, it has detected an excessive blade load and locked itself out: clean the blade, oil it, reconnect the power cord and it resets.

Can I use it abroad - do I need a voltage converter?

No converter. The clipper and its adapter are rated 100 to 240 V at 50 to 60 Hz, so they work on any mains supply worldwide with a simple plug adapter for the socket. Charge it only with the Wahl adapter that comes in the box.

How often do I oil the Stagger-Tooth blade, and can I soak it to clean it?

Oil it every day you use it: one drop of the Wahl oil in the centre of the top blade and one on each end, then run the clipper for a moment and wipe off the excess. Never dip or soak the clipper or the blade in any cleaning solution, spray or oil - brush the hair out instead, and always oil again after a blade cleaning spray. The titanium and DLC coatings make the blade rust resistant, but a coated blade still needs oil; a dry blade is the usual reason a clipper starts pulling hair after a few months.

Can I zero-gap the Magic Clip Cordless?

The top blade sits slightly behind the bottom blade and parallel to it, so the moving blade does not run on the skin; the cutting length runs from 0.5 to 1.2 mm on the taper lever. Treat it as a blending clipper: take the fade down to the line with the lever closed, and finish a skin fade or a crisp outline with a T-blade trimmer or a foil shaver. If you refit the blade after cleaning, keep that small offset.

Is it only for fades, or can I do bulk removal and beards with it?

Wahl designs it for seamless blending and fading, bulk hair removal, and shaping and free-form cutting, and the 8 patented premium cutting guides run from 1.5 to 25 mm, so it covers the whole head from a bulk take-down to a long top. Beard length is fine with a guide on; edges, necklines and detail around the ears belong to a trimmer with a narrower T-blade.

What is in the box?

The Wahl Magic Clip Cordless Black clipper, the power adapter with cord for charging and corded use, 8 patented premium cutting guides in 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6, 10, 13, 19 and 25 mm, a cleaning brush, a bottle of Wahl blade oil, a blade guard and a styling comb. There is no charging stand - the clipper charges from the cord.
