The Wahl Set Vapor Switch + stealth Beret Trimmer + Vanish Shaver is a set of three Wahl Professional machines that we put together, each for its own pass in the cut: the clipper takes the bulk and builds the fade, the trimmer sets the outline and does the detail, then the shaver takes the last pass. The trimmer brings a detachable, chrome-plated blade 32.5 mm wide and four guards; the clipper has a HyperShift™ 2-speed brushless motor at 7000 and 9000 RPM and the F32 DRIFT™ BLADE. It is the same set as our Wahl Set Vapor Switch + Hi-Viz Trimmer + Vanish Shaver, with this trimmer in place of the Hi-Viz. Each machine is also sold on its own.

Why this set

What sets it apart from our other sets with the same clipper is the trimmer. It has a detachable blade and four guards; the Hi-Viz has a zero-gap adjustable blade. Choose this set for the detachable blade and guards, and the Hi-Viz set if that is the trimmer you work with.

Professional tip

Work the outline with the trimmer's blade flat and the skin stretched, and use its four guards for blending beard length back into the line rather than for bulk. The bulk stays with the clipper, so the trimmer is kept for the line.

How to use

1. Before the first client, check that the trimmer's blade is seated, brush the clipper and trimmer blades clean and oil them with clipper oil. Check that the shaver's foil is seated and has no dent or tear. If its battery is completely run down, plug the cord into the shaver first and then into the outlet, and let it charge for 1 minute, switched off, before you use it on the cord.
2. If you set the clipper blade to zero-gap, do it with the clipper off. Still with it off, check that the moving blade sits behind the edge of the fixed blade before it touches skin.
3. Take the length down with the clipper and a guard from the seven in its box; then fade up from the bald band without a guard, opening the blade with the taper lever in small steps.
4. With the trimmer, clip on a guard for beard length or work without one for the outline; stretch the skin and set the line with light pressure.
5. Finish with the shaver on hair that is already short: stretch the skin and hold the head flat against it, then let the foil glide over the skin in short, overlapping passes. Do not press hard; let the shaver do the work.
6. Switch everything off and brush the hair out of the blades and the shaver head before you put the machines down; stand the clipper back on its power station. To lock the shaver for travel, hold its power button down for 3 seconds; do the same to unlock it.

Care and maintenance

After each client, switch off and brush the hair from the teeth and around the blades of the clipper and the trimmer with a soft, dry brush. Wipe the clipper housing with a dry cloth, and the trimmer and the shaver only with a soft, slightly damp cloth, never with solvents or scouring agents. From time to time, with the trimmer off, take its blade off and brush out the hair underneath before you refit it. At the end of the day, and whenever the blade starts to drag, put a few drops of clipper oil across the teeth of the clipper blade, run it for a few seconds and wipe off the excess. Oil the trimmer blade often, with Wahl clipper oil: one drop in the centre of the moving top blade and one on each end, then switch it on to spread the oil; oil the heel of the blade now and then, and wipe off the excess. If it cuts worse despite regular cleaning and oiling, replace the blade. For the oil, the Wahl Special Blade Oil 200ml is the bottle for the station and the Wahl Oil Tube 10ml the tube for your case. To clean the shaver, press the release button on the right side and lift the foil head off; tap it gently to clear loose hair, and handle the foil with care. Pull the cutter bars up to remove them, brush off loose hair with the pre-shave brush, then rinse them under warm water and dry them with a paper towel. Refit them by lining up the metal pin under each cutter bar with the slot of its drive finger and snapping it on, and put the foil head back on before use. Keep the foil and the cutter bars clean; they wear with use, so replace the foils often and the bars from time to time, and sooner if the shaver slows down or the foil gets warm.

• Read the manual before first use and keep it.
• Use only the supplied charger or adapter and charge as described in the manual, on a dry, heat-resistant surface.
• Do not use with a damaged cord, charger or housing. Leave repairs to an authorised repairer.
• Keep the appliance, battery and charger dry, unless the manual states otherwise. Never use a corded appliance near water.
• Blades are sharp. Switch off before changing a blade or guide comb and keep out of reach of children.
• Oil the blades regularly as described in the manual; a dry blade runs hot and pulls the hair.
• Do not open, pierce, heat or burn the lithium-ion battery.
• At the end of their life, hand in the appliance and the battery as electrical waste, not with household waste.
