Why the Kuno
A cut in the chair runs in a fixed order: the clipper takes the bulk and the taper, the trimmer sets the outline, and the foil shaver finishes. This is the clipper in that order, and WAHL names “Tapering” as one of its jobs. A taper is where the lever matters: some barbers want fixed steps they can find again on the next client, others want to blend by feel. The lever gives you both on one machine, so you choose per cut rather than per clipper.
What to expect in the hand
Corded/cordless means the battery never ends the cut: work cordless around the chair, or on the cable at the station. WAHL describes the body as “Compact and Lightweight”. The guides go on and come off by magnet, and the blade is quick-detach, which WAHL says is “for easy cleaning”.
Who it is not for
- Outlines and line-ups - that is a trimmer's job: the Wahl Beret Stealth Trimmer Black
- A skin-smooth finish - that is a foil shaver's job: the Wahl Vanish Shaver
Professional tip
Use the click positions to step through the taper in repeatable increments: count the clicks on the first client and you can find the same steps on the next. When the line between two lengths needs softening, let the lever float and blend by feel.
How to use
- Charge it before first use.
- With the clipper switched off, check the blade and oil it.
- Click a magnetic guide on for the bulk.
- Taper with the lever: clicks for set steps, floating to blend.
- Switch off, detach the blade and brush out underneath.
Care and maintenance
After each client, switch off and brush the teeth of the blade clean, and wipe the hair off the guides. At the end of the day, and whenever it starts to drag, put a few drops of clipper oil across the teeth, run it briefly and wipe off the excess. From time to time, detach the blade and brush out underneath. Keep Wahl Special Blade Oil 200ml at the station for the daily oiling, and Wahl Oil Tube 10ml in the case for work away from it.
Complete your Wahl setup
- Finish the line - a trimmer for the outline after the taper
- The last pass - a foil shaver for a skin-smooth finish
- Keep the blade in shape - clipper oil for the station and the case
Frequently asked questions
Can it run on the cable as well as the battery?
Yes. It is a corded/cordless clipper: work on its lithium-ion battery, or on the cable from a 100-240 V ~ 50/60 Hz supply.
What do the Kuno's three clicks and floating mode do?
They are the two ways the taper lever works. In click mode it stops at three positions, so you can step through a taper and find the same steps again. In floating mode it moves freely, for blending by feel.
How do the magnetic guides attach, and which sizes come with it?
They hold on by magnet: they are guides of the Magclick® System. Six come with it, numbered ½ to 4, from 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) to 1/2 inch (13.0 mm).
What kind of motor does it have?
A brushless motor, which WAHL describes as “High-performance”.
Is there anything to know about the magnets?
WAHL shows a pictogram for the magnetic guides: a red crossed-out circle over a heart with a device symbol, a double arrow marked 5 cm, and a guide with a yellow magnet warning triangle.
How do I clean and oil the blade?
Switch it off and unplug it. Brush the teeth clean after each client; at the end of the day put a few drops of clipper oil across the teeth, run it briefly and wipe off the excess. Clean it dry; never rinse it.
