Which clippers do barbers use? The 2026 professional guide by job: JRL, WAHL, BaBylissPRO and Gamma+
Choose a clipper for the job first and the brand second. This guide works through every job at the barber's chair: the tight fade, the full haircut, line-ups and detail, and the shave down to the skin. For each one it sets the JRL, WAHL, BaBylissPRO and Gamma+ clippers, trimmers and shavers we hold in stock side by side, with the figures printed on their packs and what sets them apart. Updated October 2026.
Which clippers do barbers use?
Barbers choose clippers for the work they do most. For tight fades, a clipper whose blade adjusts to zero-gap, such as the WAHL Vapor or the Senior 2.0. For bulk removal, a machine whose box names that job, such as the Magic Clip cordless. Then a trimmer for line-ups and a foil shaver for the skin.
Choose by job
Each job links to the chapter that compares its machines; a machine is listed when its box prints that use or when it is its category.
Tight fades and bald fades
To get close to the scalp and build the fade, you need a blade that sets to zero and a lever that opens it in small steps. These machines name the fade on their box or carry a fade blade.
| Machine | Blade and setting | Motor · battery · weight |
|---|---|---|
| WAHL Senior 2.0 | zero-gap, 0.7 to 1.5 mm | brushless, 8000 RPM · 2.5 h; 75-min charge · 377 g |
| WAHL Vapor Switch | F32 DRIFT™, zero-gap, 0.5 to 1.2 mm | brushless HyperShift™, 7000 or 9000 RPM · up to 3.5 h; 120-min charge · 288 g |
| WAHL Vapor | F32 FADEOUT™, zero-gap, 0.5 to 1.2 mm | brushless, 8000 RPM · up to 2.5 h; 60-min charge · 280 g |
| BaBylissPRO Boost+ BlackFX / ChameleonFX | 45 mm fade blade, zero gap adjustable; detent lever 0.8 to 3.5 mm | digital, 6800 RPM · lithium-ion 3300 mAh BaBylissPRO's 2025 catalogue lists: 2 h run time; 4 h charge; 390 g. |
| BaBylissPRO FXONE | fade blade, zero-gap adjustable; 5-position lever, 0.5 to 4.2 mm | digital · 2h30 run time; 2 h charge BaBylissPRO's 2025 catalogue lists: 370 g. |
What sets them apart. The motor and the travel of the lever. The three WAHLs are brushless, and the Vapor Switch is the only one in this group with two speeds. The two BaBylissPROs have a digital motor; the FXONE is the only one whose box describes a swappable battery. The shortest printed setting runs from 0.5 mm (Vapor, Vapor Switch, FXONE) to 0.8 mm (Boost+), the longest from 1.2 mm (Vapor, Vapor Switch) to 4.2 mm (FXONE).

The full haircut: bulk, tapers and clipper over comb
This is the machine that does most of the cut: taking length off with guards, building the taper, working over the comb. WAHL prints these jobs on its boxes; at Gamma+, BaBylissPRO and JRL these are the cutting clippers in our range.

What is the difference between clippers and trimmers?
Clippers take the length off and build the fade, with guards and a lever that opens the blade. Trimmers have a narrower blade, often T-shaped, for outlines, the neckline, beard lines and patterns. At the station the two work together, and the foil shaver comes last.
Which trimmer suits line-ups and fades?
Pick the blade width that matches your line. The WAHL cordless Detailer Li has a 40.6 mm T-Wide blade that adjusts to zero-gap, the stealth Beret a 32.5 mm detachable blade, the Chromini Duo a 0.3 mm T-Blade. At Gamma+, the Xceed trimmer comes with a Zero Gap or 0.3 mm blade-setting tool.
How close does a professional clipper cut?
For the closest cut, check two things on the box: a blade that adjusts to zero-gap and the printed cutting range. It runs from 0.5 to 1.2 mm on the WAHL Vapor and Vapor Switch, and from 0.7 to 1.5 mm on the Senior 2.0. To finish a bald fade down to the skin, the final pass is done with a foil shaver, such as the BaBylissPRO FoilFX02.
What to read on the box
| Corded or cordless | Most machines in this guide run corded and cordless: when the battery runs low, the cable takes over. |
|---|---|
| The blade | Look at the cutting range in millimetres and the zero-gap mention. DLC is a hard-wearing coating, not a self-lubricating one: that blade gets oiled too. |
| The motor | Read the type (brushless, rotary, digital) and the printed speed, without drawing conclusions about cutting power. |
| Run time and charge | Take both figures as printed, “up to” included: they only compare between boxes that measure them the same way. |
| What is in the box | Guards and their sizes, charging base or stand, blade-setting tool: a station is built with these accessories too. |
For day-to-day blade care, follow our three-step routine: How to clean and oil clipper blades: the 3-step barber routine.

Frequently asked questions
What brand of clippers do most barbers use?
In the Beauty As Well barber range, barbers and hairdressers find four brands: JRL, WAHL, BaBylissPRO and Gamma+. Each covers the clipper, the trimmer and the shaver, and this guide sets them out line by line.
What types of clippers do barbers use?
Barbers work with three types: a clipper for length, bulk and fades, a trimmer for line-ups and detail, and a foil shaver for the final pass on the skin. Most of the machines in this guide run corded and cordless.
Do DLC blades need oiling?
Yes. DLC is a hard-wearing coating, not a self-lubricating one. Brush the blade clean after every client. At the end of the day, or as soon as it drags, put a few drops of clipper oil across the teeth, run it for a few seconds and wipe off the excess.
Can you rinse clippers under the tap?
No. Clean the blade dry with the brush, never rinse it under the tap and never put it in any liquid. Keep the machine and its cable away from wet surfaces at the station.
Which clippers in this guide charge by USB-C?
The WAHL Vapor Switch comes with a USB-C cord and the Senior 2.0 is USB-C compatible. At Gamma+, the Xceeds, the Boosted Up and the Hitter Up charge on their base or by USB-C cable.
